However, it will always be neuter in genderNo definition set for genderLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. The word число can be used after the day of the month, though it is usually omitted. When it is added, it will have the same case as the ordinal number.
nominative neuter
Сегодня восемнадцатое число?
siVOdnya vasimNAtsataye chsLO
Is today the 18th?
lit. Is today the 18th date?
Most often, the ordinal number will either be nominative or genitive. We’ll show you some examples below!
Some more notes on the above examples:
Russian ordinal numbers (words like “first,” “fifth,” or “seventeenth”) can come in different cases and genders. When giving the date, you will always use the neuter form, but you will need to use different cases.
In Russian, we say the year just like any other ordinal number. So don’t say “1957” as “nineteen fifty-seven(th),” say it as “one thousand nine hundred and fifty-seventh.”
To make it easier for you to say dates in Russian, you’ll find most of the necessary numbers and words in the Russian months and dates table at the bottom of the page!
How to ask and answer “what is the date?” in Russian?
The phrase you will need to ask about the date in Russian is the following.
Какое сегодня число?
kaKOye siVOdnya chisLO
This question can be modified to ask about past and future dates, too:
Какое вчера было число?
kaKOye fchiRA BYla chisLO
What was yesterday’s date?
Какое завтра будет число?
kaKOye ZAftra BOOdit chisLO
When you answer this question, the ordinal number representing the day of the month will be nominative neuter. This is because the word число(number/date) is neuter in Russian, and we are technically talking about the “Xth day” of a month.
So, for example, you might ask:
ordinal number (nominative neuter)month (genitive)
Speaker A:Какое вчера было число?
kaKOye fchiRA BYla chisLO?
What was yesterday’s date?
Speaker B:Двадцать восьмое февраля.
DVAtsat vasMOye fivraLYA
The twenty-eighth of February.
If we all already know the month, you can leave out the name of the month.
ordinal number (nominative neuter)
Speaker A:Какое сегодня число?
kaKOye siVOdnya chisLO?
Speaker B:Сегодня девятое.
siVOdnya diVYAtoya aktiBRYA
In this context, you can optionally include число[chisLO](number/date), in the nominative case. This follows the ordinal number for the day.
The question below is normally used to ask about the day of week, not a date:
Какой сегодня день?
kaKOY siVOdnya den
Just like in English!
When else is the noun for the day nominative?
The ordinal number for the day of the month is also nominative when the date is the subject of a sentence. This is common when you are talking about holidays or special occasions.
nominative neutergenitive
Шестое октября - мой день рождения.
shisTOye aktyabRYA - moy dyen razhDYEniya
The sixth of October is my birthday.
12 апреля 1961 года - день первого полёта человека в космос.
dviNAtsataye apRYElya TYsicha diviTSOT shizdiSYAT PYERvava GOda - den PYERvava paLYOta chilaVYEka а KOSmas
April 12th, 1961 is the day of the first human space flight.
How to ask and answer “when” or “on what date” in Russian?
The questions below are used to ask “when” or “on what date” something happened (or will happen) in Russian.
genitive case
Какого числа?
kaKOva chisLA
To answer either of these questions, you need to use genitive neuter for the ordinal number. This means that you’ll use the genitive for every word in the date! For example:
genitive case
Speaker A:Какого числа ты уезжаешь?
kaKOva chisLA ty ooyeZHAyesh?
What date are you leaving?
Speaker B:Второго сентября.
ftaROva sentyabRYA
genitive case
Speaker A:Когда произошёл запуск первого спутника?
kagDA praizaSHOL ZApoosk PYERvava SPOOTnika?
When did the launch of the first satellite (sputnik) happen?
Speaker B:4-го октября 1957-го года.
chitVYORtava aktibRYA TYsicha diviTSOT pidiSYAT sidMOva GOda
While in English, the preposition “on” would often be used with dates that say “when” something is happening, in Russian, the genitive case is used without any preposition.
When to use dative, accusative, or instrumental case in dates?
If a date is used after a preposition that requires another case (like dative, accusative, or instrumental), then the ordinal number for the day of the month will take on the case required by the preposition.
However, all of the other words in the date (the month, the year, etc.) will still be genitive. For example:
prepositiondative casegenitive case
Мы вернемся к шестому апреля.
my virNYOMsja k shistOmoo apRYElya
We will be back by April 6th.
→ The preposition к[k](by) requires the dative case.
prepositionaccusative casegenitive case
Я записалась к зубному на двенадцатое июня.
ya zapiSAlas g zoobNOmoo na dviNAtsataye iYOOnya
I made an appointment with the dentist for June 12th.
→ The preposition на[na](for) requires the accusative case.
How to write dates with numbers in Russian?
When writing dates in Russian, we always use the order date + month + year, even when writing the date using numbers.
This means that, unlike in American English, the number for the day of the month is always given before the number of the month:
03.05 is May 3, NOT March 5
Also, as you can see in the example above, dots are more common than slashes when it comes to writing dates using numbers.
Here are some examples of different ways to write the same date in Russian.
| |
→ Remember that months are not capitalized in Russian!
→ Here, the word года is abbreviated as “г”.
Conclusion
All in all, the genitive case is practically unavoidable when you are saying dates in Russian. You need it when:
answering the question, “what is today’s date?”
asking and answering the question, “when? / on which date?”
It’s also important to know how Russians write dates because it is different from how it’s done in English.
