Activities: “How to use possessive pronouns in German?”

Activity 1: ‘So ein Zufall!’ (What a coincidence!)

A group of friends is talking about their vacation plans and realize that they have planned very similar things for their summers. Complete their dialogue by supplying the correct possessive pronouns.

Tip 1:

Remember, a possessive pronoun replaces a noun that has been previously mentioned. In each line of dialogue, there is an underlined noun. Your possessive pronoun should match that noun in gender and case, but you’ll have to pick the dictionary form based on who is talking!

Tip 2:

In parentheses we provide the gender of the noun to be replaced: m. = masculine; f. = feminine; n. = neuter.

Example:

Anna: Ich möchte mit meinem Auto (n.) nach Paris fahren! Und du, Jakob? Fährst du mit deinem?
Jakob: So ein Zufall! Ich möchte auch mit meinem nach Paris fahren!

- Julia und Lena: Wir wollen unseren Eltern (plural) ganz viele Postkarten schreiben! Und du, Yannik? Willst du auch schreiben?
- Yannik: So ein Zufall! Ich will auch ganze viele schreiben!
- Erik: Ich will meinem Chef (masc.) keine Email aus dem Urlaub schreiben. Und Sie, Herr Schneider? Wollen Sie eine Email schreiben?
- Herr Schneider: Nein, ich will auch keine schreiben.

Activity 2: ‘Chaos nach der Party’ (Chaos after the party)

Laura invited some friends to a winter party at a grand mansion: sleigh rides, skating, sledding, and skiing were on the program and, of course, everyone arrived dressed warmly in their best winter gear. Before the grand dinner, everyone dropped their coats, scarves, and mittens pell-mell onto the floor of one of the guest bedrooms. But now, it’s time to go home! Help the party guests locate their winter gear by selecting the correct possessive pronouns in each sentence!

Jakob: Wo ist mein Mantel?
Lena: Ist das !deinem / !deiner / !deins?
Dorothea: Nein, das ist nicht !seiner / !ihrer / !deiner, sondern seinem / ihrs / meiner.
Vocabulary:

Lena: Hat jemand rote Winterstiefel gesehen?
Paul: Sind das !meine / !deine / !deinen, Lena? Sie sind rot!
