Activities: “How does German word order work?”

Activity 1: The Mysterious Artifact

You are on a rescue mission on a distant planet to find a group of scientists that disappeared there last week. In front of a large sand hill you find a pile of pebbles. What is that? They have words written on them!

A photo of a bunch of river rocks. Many of them are labeled with German words or phrases in different colors. The content of the text is described in the activities below.

After spending some time looking at the rocks, you notice that the rocks with the same color of writing can be used to form a sentence! We’ve sorted them out for you below. Use German word order rules to make sentences and find out what happened to the scientists.

Activity 2: Main and dependent clauses

You need to give your captain an explanation on why you had to take the shuttle out on a quick joy ride to Jupiter. Turn the second sentence into a dependent clause by using the subordinating conjunction in parentheses. Pay attention to the word order!

Bonus: What happens if the subordinate clause comes first? Rewrite sentence 1, 2, and 5 so that the subordinate clause comes first, but watch out for word order. What happens to the verb in the main clause? Don’t forget: the subject is either right in front or right behind the verb!

Activity 3: The job interview

You recorded a message to apply for the position of freighter captain on the Betelgeuze-Antares route, but somehow it doesn’t sound quite right. Rewrite the sentences by starting with the underlined element to give it some extra stress.
