Activity 1: ‘Was nehmen wir mit?’ (What will we take?)

You and your two friends, Tom and Martina, want to go on summer vacation. Tom’s mother, Frau Schneider, is also coming along. You’ve packed all your bags, but you realize you all are taking way too much stuff.

Pick the appropriate form of the possessive adjective to talk to your friends. Tell them what you will leave at home and what they should unpack.

Tip

The gender of the nouns is given in parentheses: m = masculine, f = feminine, n = neuter, pl = plural. To choose the correct form, you will need to pick the right case for your possessive adjective. Pay attention to the role of the noun in the sentence: Is it the subject, the direct object, or something else?

Examples:

  • Tom, dein altes T-Shirt (n) lässt du zu Hause.

  • Martina und Tom! Eure Pässe und Bordkarten (pl) müsst ihr mitnehmen!

Now you try!

  • Frau Schneider, Sie sollten Sonnencreme (f) einpacken!

  • Martina! Sonnenbrille (f) nimmst du am besten mit!

  • Ich nehme warmen Mantel (m) doch lieber nicht mit.

  • Tom! Gibst du mir Wanderstock (m)? Ich habe Platz und kann ihn einpacken!

  • Stadtplan (m) ist viel zu alt. Ich lasse ihn hier und kaufe mir einen neuen.

  • Tom! Martina! Ich denke, ihr solltet Laptops (pl) hier lassen!

  • Frau Schneider, hier ist Portemonnaie (n). Ich habe es auf dem Tisch gefunden.

  • Tom! Du und ich, sollten wir Schwimmbrillen (pl) einpacken? Was denkst du?

  • Ach Martina, die Dokumente Chefs (m) kannst du zu Hause lassen. Es sind Ferien!

  • Ich brauche Lieblingshose (f) zum Reisen! Ich muss sie mitnehmen.

Activity 2: ‘Wem gehört denn das?’ (Who does that belong to?)

At the end of your camping trip with your friends, Martina, Tom, and Tom’s mother, Frau Schneider, there are many items left lying around at the campsite. You take it upon yourself to reunify items and owners.

Fill in the dialogue with the missing possessive adjectives.

Tip

Pay attention to the gender and the role of the noun in the sentence. Also pay attention to the context of the dialogues.

    • Hey, Martina, ist das rotes T-Shirt (n)?

    • Nein, das ist nicht T-Shirt. Ich denke, das ist Toms T-Shirt. Ja, ich bin mir sicher: das ist T-Shirt.

    • Hört mal, Tom und Martina, das sind doch Wasserflaschen (pl), oder?

    • Ja, danke, das sind Wasserflaschen.

    • Frau Schneider, ist das vielleicht Buch (n)? Es heißt “Geisternacht auf Burg Hohenstein”.

    • Nein, das ist nicht Buch. Tom! Ist das Buch?

    • Ja, das ist Buch. Danke, Mama!

    • Ich kann roten Rucksack (m) nicht finden! Tom, Martina! Habt ihr ihn gesehen?

    • Nein, wir haben Rucksack nicht gesehen, aber wir können dir Tasche (f) ausleihen.

    • Nein, danke. Tasche kann ich leider nicht gebrauchen. Sie ist zu klein.

    • Tom, ich glaube, das ist Surfbrett (m), oder?

    • Nein, frag mal Martina. Das sieht aus wie Surfbrett.

    • Martina?

    • Ja, danke, das ist Surfbrett.
