These activities are part of our English Grammar series. The skills we are practicing here are covered in our article:

Activity 1: Which conjunction?

Complete the sentences using the options below.

for
and
nor
but
or
yet
so
  1. Do you prefer chocolate strawberry ice cream?

  2. I like cats dogs.

  3. It is raining, I’ll take my umbrella with me.

  4. Our family hasn’t been to Edinburgh, have we been to Glasgow.

  5. We know that this is not yet or but, because of the word order after the conjunction: have we not we have! Subject-auxiliary inversion happens only after nor.

  6. I like strawberries and blueberries, not bananas.

  7. Yet is possible here, but it fits better in the example below, since this is not an emotional or poetic contrast.

  8. My husband brought me flowers, it is Valentine’s Day.

  9. She was smiling, something about her eyes suggested that she was very sad.

  10. Yet is equally acceptable here. However, this is a good place to use yet as it is an emotional and poetic contrast.

Activity 2: Jill and Becky visit Edinburgh

Can you spot the coordinating conjunctions in the text below that have been misused? When you find one that is wrong, replace it with another one that works better.
