These activities are part of our Brazilian Portuguese Grammar series. The skills we are practicing here are covered in our article:

Activity 1: Form the compound past perfect

Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the compound past perfect tense of the verbs in parentheses.

  • Eu não estava com fome porque eu já (almoçar).

  • Nós chegamos atrasadas porque (perder) o ônibus.

  • As crianças ainda não (tomar) banho quando os pais chegaram.

  • Quando eu cheguei em casa, minha irmã já (sair).

  • Eles não se perderam porque já (visitar) aquele lugar.

  • Eu nunca (andar) de barco até hoje, mas estou adorando!

Activity 2: Paulo’s novel

Paulo is writing a novel. He’s put a passage from it below, in which he sometimes uses the simple past perfect. But now that he’s editing, he decides he wants to use the compound past perfect instead, to give the story a more informal tone.

Part 1: Identify the past perfect

First, select each of the seven verbs in the simple past perfect:

Part 2: Change the form of the verbs

Now transform each of the verbs you selected above into their compound past perfect forms, as illustrated below:

ex: trabalhara → tinha trabalhado
